10 Thought Provoking Sculptures Made From Beach Waste
Animals, Design, Inspirational, Lists, Other, Shocking, Street ArtSadly, we use a lot of plastic, and the most recent estimate of how much plastic makes its way into our oceans each year is 8 million metric tonnes. That’s a lot of plastic. To put it in perspective, given that a standard coke bottle weighs in at approximately 20 grams for the plastic alone, that’s somewhere around 400 billion plastic bottles in the ocean — each year. While scientists don’t know where 90% of this plastic ends up, a portion of it makes its ways to the many beaches on our planet. Using the plastic found on and around beaches, Washed Ashore, an organization based in Oregon created some rather large plastic sculptures. All of the creations on this list were made in the hopes of bringing awareness to how much plastic and other debris end up in and around our oceans.
Giant Plastic Shark
This shark, along with all of the other creatures on this list, has been created from plastic waste found on and around beaches. It’s sad to see that enough waste has been found on beaches and the water surrounding them to create something of this size.
Starfish
This starfish, which was made from countless bottles, bottle caps and other plastic materials, is both beautiful and shocking.
Seahorse
This seahorse is a beautiful representation of its living counterpart. As you can see in the image above, the creature has been formed by countless pieces of plastic, including brushes, combs and bottles.
Sea Anemone
Here we can see some sea anemones and a couple of starfish created from waste. It’s shocking to see how much waste Washed Ashore actually find on and around beaches, which is more than enough to create these sculptures.
Starfish
Here we can see another red, white and blue starfish. Maybe this is the Captain America of the sea?
Giant Plastic Fish
This fish sculpture is both impressive and large. Hopefully with this on display, people will be more wary about where they leave their trash.
Scary Piranha
This giant piranha looks like it’d be able to gobble a human whole. Thankfully, and sadly, it’s only made out of plastic.
Giant Octopus
This octopus is fairly impressive, showing passersby a creature from the deep, while hopefully warning them that the octopus will chase after them if they litter.
Mermaid
Ariel looks like she’s dyed her hair and painted her tail. In all seriousness, these sculptures serve as a well-deserved warning of people discarding their rubbish wherever and whenever they please.
Penguin
This Penguin doesn’t look too happy. Maybe it’s because he’s made of out plastic, maybe it’s because there was enough plastic to make him, who knows. What we do know, though, is that people should be mindful of where they put their trash, as creating a monstrous plastic penguin like this must require a heap of rubbish.
