During this time, Rich Paul’s dad put him in a private, Roman Catholic high school. Around the time of his graduation, in 1999, his dad died of cancer.

After high school, Rich Paul learned how to buy and sell vintage sports jerseys. He bought throwback jerseys from Atlanta and sold them out of the trunk of his car back in Cleveland. 

Friendship With Lebron James 

In 2002, he ran into LeBron James at the Akron–Canton Airport. Lebron James was interested in the throwback Warren Moon jersey that Rich Paul was wearing.

They exchanged info, and soon Rich Paul was selling James authentic vintage jerseys of Magic Johnson (Lakers) and Joe Namath (Rams).

This exchange was the beginning of a long and lucrative friendship and business relationship between the two men. It also inspired Rich Paul in future business ventures.

Career as a Sports Agent 

In 2003, following the NBA draft, Rich Paul became an intricate part of Lebron James’s small, close inner circle, which included his childhood friends, Randy Mims and Maverick Carter.

As part of this group, Rich Paul would make the strategic decision, likely encouraged by Lebron James, to work at Creative Artists Agency under Leon Rose, who represented the basketball player in a contract extension negotiation in 2006 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. 

In 2012, Rich Paul and Lebron James left CAA. He started his own sports agency, called Klutch Sports Group, with James being his first and forever biggest client.

Then, in 2013, Rich Paul hired fellow agent and attorney, Mark Termini, to handle the NBA contract negotiations for his company. 

Conflict With The NCAA

In 2019, the NCAA altered its rules for sports agents, requiring all such agents to have a bachelor’s degree. It became known as the “Rich Paul Rule” in the press because he did not go to college and the rule appeared to have been prompted by his actions working with a high school basketball player named Darius Bazley.

In spite of the new rule, Rich Paul wrote an opinion piece stating that the rule would keep people like him without college degrees and others from less fortunate backgrounds — particularly people of color — from being successful as sports agents while giving NCAA executives more control over players. The NCAA later reversed the new rule.

By 2020, Mark Termini had negotiated more than $1.4 billion in NBA contracts for Rich Paul, Klutch Sports, and its clients. By then, Klutch Sports had an impressive stable of more than two dozen clients. 

This, along with the outstanding financial numbers Rich Paul was producing, led to United Talent Agency (UTA) asking him to run its sports division.

Through this agreement, Rich Paul increased the division’s clients from four to twenty-four. In 2020, he was given a spot on the company’s board of directors.

Later that year, Rich Paul created his “Klutch Conversations,” which took place during the NBA All-Star Weekend.

It was a collaboration with SocialWorks and General Mills aiming at encouraging young people to improve their financial literacy.

Legal Battle

The following summer, in 2021, Rich Paul was sued by Nerlens Noel for allegedly breaching their contract — including negligence — and the agent’s fiduciary duty, after he turned down a $70 million contract offer from the Dallas Mavericks back in 2018.
