Gautam Adani was born on June 24, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. His mother was Shanti Adani. His father, Shantilal Adani, was a man in the textile business. Although Adani had an eye for business, he did not follow in his father’s textile footsteps. 

He was born to a large family and has seven siblings. His brothers are Vinod Adani, Mahasukhi Adani, Rajesh Adani, Vasant Adani. His sisters remain unknown. 

Adani graduated from Gujarat University, India. After that, he pursued further education in hopes of achieving his bachelor’s degree in commerce but dropped out after his second year. 

In 1978, Gautam Adani found himself living in Mumbai as a teenager. He worked for the Mahendra Brothers as a diamond sorter. There, he learned a great deal about diamonds and Adani decided to start his own diamond brokerage in Zaveri, Mumbai. 

By 1981, his older brother had purchased a plastic unit and had asked Adani to manage operations. This fueled his insatiable ambition and led to him learning more about the businesses he would later be a large part of. 

Adani then founded Adani Exports in 1988. Today, that business is known as the Adani Group.

He heads the Adani Airports business as well as participates in various other projects within Adani Group. He is the vice president of the finance department at Adani Group.
