Earthquake Causes Avalanche On Mount Everest Resulting In 17 Deaths

An insane 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, causing a deadly avalanche to occur on Mount Everest. Current reports state that at least 17 people are dead, and an unknown number are either injured or missing during the catastrophe, reports USA Today.

It was unclear at first as to how many people lost their lives at the base camp, where nearly 30 tents had been flattened due to the avalanche. Journalists, climbers, their family members, and plenty of other individuals gathered to receive news on the latest happenings surrounding the massive mountain. A little over a year ago, another avalanche on Everest killed 16 Sherpa guides, which was, at the time, considered to be the highest death toll on the mountain. This recent avalanche could surpass that, though it remains unclear as to how many are dead.

Hundreds of climbers attempt the climb to the top of Mount Everest each year, with 800 accomplishing the climb in 2013.
