Born Jarad Anthony Higgins in 1998 in Chicago, Illinois. When he was just a toddler, his father and mother divorced, and his father left the family. That left the upbringing for early life Jarad Higgins to his mother, and she did so with a strict regimen that did not allow Jarad to listen to rap or hip-hop music. Most of the music he was exposed to at the time came from sources such as video games, and there he heard Blink-182, Fallout Boy, Billy Idol, and Black Sabbath. Always very musically inclined, at a young age he learned to play guitar, trumpet, piano, and drums.

Substance abuse

All throughout his early years, including adolescence, Jarad was a heavy drug user. In the sixth grade, he began drinking hydrocodone cough syrup which he mixed with his favorite soda. At roughly the same time, he began abusing Percocet, Xanax, and cigarettes. While still in high school, he began creating his own music using his iPhone and uploaded it to SoundCloud, the online music platform. It was obvious to all his friends that he had considerable music talent, and they encouraged him to try it as a career. This got him listening to more rap and recording his own.

Beginnings of Juice Wrld’s career

Juice attended Homewood Flossmoor High, and as a high school sophomore, Juice wrote then recorded his first original work called Forever and made it available on SoundCloud. His artist’s name at that time was ‘JuicetheKid,’ which he took on due to his admiration for Tupac, who had just starred in the film, Juice. After he became considerably better established, he changed his stage name to Juice Wrld to symbolize his taking over the world with his music. He was already gaining a strong following on SoundCloud and had become well-known in hip-hop circles for his distinctive style when he was discovered by a record label.

More success for Juice Wrld

He signed a contract with Internet Money Records, which is a label focusing on promising talent that achieves popularity on social media platforms. By the summer of 2017, Juice Wrld released his first full-length album, entitled 9, 9, 9, which included his smash hit Lucid Dreams. When this debut album came out, he immediately got the attention of fellow rappers Lil Bibby and Waka Flocka Flame. He was persuaded to sign a record deal with a studio co-owned by Lil Bibby and later released an EP containing the mega-hit All Girls Are The Same.

Having established himself firmly as a force to be reckoned with, Juice released his second studio album, Death Race for Love, in 2019, and it immediately debuted at the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. Two songs from the album would become hits, and he worked on five other collaborations with other artists that year. Following the release of this second album, he was asked to go on tour with Nicki Minaj on her Nicki Wrld Tour. The last single he worked on while he was living was another collaborative effort with NBA Youngboy Bandit, which got as high as #10 on the charts.

Death of Juice Wrld

The manner of his death was almost as public as his meteoric rise to fame. Juice was in Chicago’s Midway International Airport when he was alerted to the fact that police were waiting for him because they had been tipped off that he was in possession of drugs. While police searched his baggage and the airplane, Juice was seen downing several pills thought to be Percocet. He collapsed and began convulsing in the airport, at which point authorities tried to revive him with Narcan. He briefly regained consciousness and was quickly delivered to Advocate Christ Medical Center, but then lost his battle with drugs and was pronounced dead about an hour later. Thus was a very brief but promising musical career cut short.
