Kamala Devi Harris is a politician, attorney, and author. She was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her younger sister, Maya Harris, is an attorney and a political analyst at MSNBC. Kamala’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan is a Tamil Indian—she moved to the U.S. in 1958 when she was 19 as a graduate student and later worked as a breast cancer researcher at the University of Illinois. Her father, Donald J. Harris, is a Jamaican who immigrated to the U.S. in 1961. He received a Ph.D. in economics in 1966 from UC Berkeley and serves as a Stanford University professor emeritus of economics.

In 2011, Kamala Harris became the first African-American and South Asian American to hold the office of Attorney General in the history of California. Harris was California’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2017 for two consecutive terms.
