Two Men Manage Real Life Shawshank Redemption Escape From Prison
Two prisoners have escaped from a New York prison in scenes that are reminiscent of hit movie The Shawshank Redemption. Richard Matt and David Sweat both managed to free themselves from the facility by cutting holes in the cell walls that fed into a network of pipes. Officials believe that the two men were somehow able to cut through the steel walls and emerge from a manhole cover in a neighboring street in an operation that could have taken days or even weeks to set up.
Even more embarrassing for the prison was the fact that Matt and Sweat, both convicted murderers, left a taunting note on the piping that read, “Have a nice day.”
Following the elaborate escape, police and prison staff are struggling to come up with any solid information about the whereabouts of the two prisoners or how they acquired the power tools needed to cut through the walls. Governor Andrew Cuomo explained the situation, saying, “The truth is we have a number of leads but nothing that would lead us to a specific conclusion about where they are.”
New York officials have declared the escape a “crisis situation” and are now offering a substantial reward for those who have any information that could lead to the recapture of the two fugitives, with up to $50,000 available for each of the two escapees.
