Mick Fanning, a professional surfer from Australia, had an extremely close encounter with a pair of sharks during the final round of a surfing competition in South Africa on Sunday. Typically shark attacks aren’t captured on camera, but this time the dramatic ordeal was captured on live television.

Fanning fought off the attack and managed to escape the intense confrontation unscathed. Unfortunately, the close call led organizers of the J-Bay Open in Eastern Cape to cancel the finals as the waters were deemed too unsafe to continue, and the surfers were shaken up.

In the terrifying live television broadcast, Fanning can be seen fighting to stay on his board as one of the sharks thrashes violently next to him in an attempt to take him under. Luckily for Fanning he appeared to be saved by his tether, which was the first thing that caught the shark’s mouth on his way to Fanning’s leg.
