New Study Shows Free Speech Is In Danger

It’s easy to imagine people, places, and things being in danger, but not so much for concepts — especially those that entire countries are built upon. Yet it looks as if that’s the case these days; there’s evidence, and plenty of it, that the American populace might be at risk of losing something as vital and obvious as free speech.

The main idea in this video is that more and more, people are asking for “freedom from speech” so that they can be spared from anything that offends them. To be fair, it’s not as if every opinion should be thrown into the public like a wedding bouquet, but there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed. Arguably, being forbidden from passing out copies of the U.S. constitution — on Constitution Day — is one of them. Tiny “free speech zones” on college campuses probably aren’t helping matters, either. Still, time will tell how this issue plays out across the country.

It’s a safe bet that students out there would rather spend their time away from The Great Gatsby than with noses shoved into them — but that should come from the will to blow off work, not from someone deciding that its content is too thorny to handle.
