Russian Authorities Set Up ‘Wedding Police’ Force

Officials in the North Caucasus region of Adygea, Russia, have created a brand new police unit that will tackle unruly behavior and violence at weddings. The first of its kind in the country, it is made up of some 40 officers and will focus on stopping actions that have been causing widespread disruption in the area.

Several weddings have recently been involved in criminal acts, primarily shootings. Police believe that people are firing out of cars that are part of wedding convoys in celebration, unaware of the dangers it can cause. These convoys also often pay little notice to traffic laws and put other road users in danger. Reports indicate several people have been injured and the ‘wedding police’ will try to put a stop to these actions by fining guests and confiscating weapons.

The creation of the ‘wedding police’ should put an end to uncontrolled expressions of joy by people in wedding motorcades,” said Adygea’s Interior Minister Aleksandr Rechitsky. The force will patrol churches and wedding routes that are popular in the region as well as “places frequented by wedding celebrations“.
