Akon (Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam) or just Aliaune Thiam was born on April 16, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, but grew up in Senegal. His mother, Kine Gueye Thiam, was a dancer, and his father, Mor Thiam, was a percussionist. They moved to Union City, New Jersey, when he was seven. Before settling in Newark, New Jersey, he spent time between the United States and Senegal. Akon attended high school at William L. Akon entered the music industry in 2003, and immediately Devyne Stephens recognized his talent and signed him to his production company. Stephens started grooming him, and after recording some songs, nobody came into the picture. His breakthrough came in 2004 following the release of his debut album Trouble. This album featured songs like “Locked Up,” “Lonely,” and “Ghetto.” “Locked Up” reached number 8 in the United States, while “Lonely” was among the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2005.
