Billy Gibbons is one of the founding members of the rock band ZZ Top, the band was formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas — he is best known as the guitarist and is the primary lead vocalist. He formed his first band in 1968, the psychedelic blues rock band the Moving Sidewalks, which recorded several singles and one full-length album, Flash. Early Life
Billy Gibbons’s real name is William Frederick Gibbons. He was born on December 16, 1949-in Houston, Texas. His father, Frederick Royal, was an entertainer and orchestra conductor who worked at MGM Studios based in Beverly Hills, California. Gibbons had a knack for music when he was five, and his passion sparked even further when his mother took him and his sister to see Elvis Presley. When he was seven years old, he joined his father in a BB King recording session; he was one of the greatest blues musicians of all time.
As Gibbons grew a bit older, his father wanted him to advance in music so he sent him to New York City to study with musician Tito Puente. On Gibbons’ 13th birthday, he was gifted with a sunburst Gibson Melody Maker and a Fender Champ amplifier. While attending Warner Brothers’ art school in Hollywood, California, at the age of 18, he formed a band called the Moving Sidewalks, they managed to compose a song called 99th Floor, along with several other singles and one full-length album. In that same period, Gibbons strikes a friendship with guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. Through this connection, the Moving Sidewalks received Hendrix’s approval and opened four dates for the Jimi Hendrix Experience during Hendrix’s first American headlining tour.
Career
After the Moving Sidewalks broke up, Gibbons formed the ZZ Top band in 1969. Other founding members include Dusty Hill as bassist and vocalist, and Frank Beard on drums, with Gibbons being the guitarist and vocalist for their newly formed blues rock band. In 1971, the band signed with London Records and released their first album called ZZ Top’s First Album.
From 1971 up to the present time, 2022, the band has released 15 studio albums, four live albums, seven compilation albums, and 44 singles. Their most notable albums are Eliminator (1983), Afterburner (1985), Recycler (1990), and Antenna (1994). ZZ Top has sold over 50 million albums around the world; their classics include La Grange, Sharp Dressed Man, Tush, Cheap Sunglasses, and Gimme All Your Lovin’.
Solo
After many decades with the band, Gibbons wanted to create his own legacy and went solo while remaining with his band. In his solo albums, Gibbons collaborated with many artists, including Queens of the Stone Age, Nickelback, Hank Williams III, and Les Paul, to name a few. Billy Gibbons’ first album was released in November 2015, titled Perfectamundo. Gibbons’ second solo album, The Big Bad Blues, was released in 2018. Hardware is Gibbons’ third solo studio album, released in 2021.
Television
Between 2005-2014, Gibbons appeared on seven episodes of the Fox crime procedural comedy-drama TV series Bones, in which he played the father of Michaela Conlin’s character, Angela. He also lent his voice to Fox’s animated show King of the Hill.

In 2005, Gibbons published his first book titled Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead, a biography of BFG and his band, legendary car, and guitar collections. A new version was released in 2020 for the 50th anniversary of ZZ Top. Gibbons joined author Tom Vickers and photographer David Perry to expand on each category further. Business Venture
In 2011, Gibbons had a joint venture with Texas-based Mojo Products, LLC to launch various of sauces, including Have Mercy Hot Pepper Sauce, Classic Pepper Sauce, Sweet Heat BBQ Sauce, Blanco BBQ Sauce, Scorpion Garlic Salsa, and Green Machine Salsa. Personal Life
The native Texan Billy Gibbons finally settled down at the ripe age of 56. In December 2005, he married his longtime girlfriend, Gilligan Stillwater, 56 years of age. Stillwater’s birthname is Ellen Oetjen, it is unclear why she changed her name.
Gibbons is an avid car collector, especially vintage ones. Among his automobile collection: a 1948 Cadillac Series 62, a 1950 Ford Business Coupe, a 1958 Ford Thunderbird, and a 1933 Ford Coupe.
On July 28, 2021, Gibbons’ bandmate, the bassist and vocalist of ZZ Top, Dusty Hill, died in sleep at his home in Houston, Texas, at the age of 72. Many celebrities paid condolences toward Hill, including Paul Stanley, Ozzy Osbourne, John Fogerty, Flea, Zakk Wylde, and Duck Dynasty founder Phil Robertson.
Elwood Francis, the band’s longtime guitar tech, will replace Hill according to Hill’s wish. In a statement according to Billy Gibbons, “Dusty emphatically grabbed my arm and said, ‘Give Elwood the bottom end, and take it to the Top.’ He meant it, amigo. He really did.” Billy Gibbons’ third solo album, Hardware, is completely dedicated to his bandmate and lifelong friend, Dusty Hill.
