Bob Saget was an American stand-up comedian and actor who appealed to both die-hard comedy fans and family. While Saget was known for his raunchy comedy routines, he rose to fame playing Danny Tanner on the family-friendly sitcom Full House. Saget was a genuine talent who is missed by many. Before his death, Saget’s net worth was estimated to be $50 million. A large portion of Saget’s income came from the success of Full House, which has spent many years in syndication. Saget also returned for the revival of the sitcom, Fuller House. Saget was also the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos for eight seasons.

Later in his life, Saget saw his net worth increase even further after he narrated the successful CBS show How I Met Your Mother. Who Was Bob Saget?

Saget was born to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Early in his life, his family moved to Norfolk, Virginia. While Saget was a teen, his family moved to Los Angeles, where he had the opportunity to spend time with Larry Fine from the famous comedy team The Three Stooges. Saget’s family moved back to Philadelphia while Saget was still in his teens, and it was there that he graduated from Abington Senior High School.

While Saget considered becoming a doctor, one of his teachers encouraged him to pursue a creative career. Inspired, Saget chose to attend the film school at Temple University. During that time, he made his first short film, Through Adam’s Eyes. After graduating from college in 1978, Saget planned to take graduate courses at the University of Southern California, but he dropped out only a few days into his first semester. He began performing as a comedian, appearing on programs like The Merv Griffin Show. He married his first wife, Sherri Kramer, in 1982.

In 1987, Saget briefly appeared on The Morning Program on CBS, a breakfast television show. Later that year, however, Saget would be offered his breakout role on Full House. Saget starred as widowed father Danny Tanner, who also happened to be a morning show host. Along with his brother-in-law Jesse and his best friend Joey, Danny attempted to raise his three young daughters in southern California. 

By season three, Full House was a massive success. In 1989, Saget became the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos and worked on both shows at the same time. He also explored behind-the-scenes work, directing an ABC television movie called For Hope. The movie was inspired by Saget’s personal life, including the recent death of his sister, Gay Saget. Full House ended its run in 1995, which freed up Saget to explore other opportunities. In 1997, Saget divorced his wife, but the former couple continued to co-parent their three daughters.

Saget’s first feature film as a director, Dirty Work, was released in 1998, approximately a year after Saget left his position as the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos. The film, which starred Norm MacDonald and Artie Lange from The Howard Stern Show, was a critical and commercial failure, but it has developed a cult following since its release. 

In 2001, Saget returned to playing a widowed father, playing Matt Stewart on the short-lived WB show Raising Dad. A few years later, Saget found more success when he was cast as the narrator on How I Met Your Mother. The show ran for nine seasons and had a lasting impact on pop culture. During that same time, Saget returned to hosting, serving as the host for the game show 1 vs. 100 on NBC.

In 2007, Saget put out a comedy special for HBO called That Ain’t Right. He dedicated the special to his father, Ben Saget, who had passed away that same year. Around that time, Saget began to make appearances on shows as a fictional version of himself. He made several appearances on the show Entourage and recorded a song with Jamie Kennedy called “Rollin’ with Saget.”

Saget chronicled his life and experiences in his book Dirty Daddy, which was released in 2014. To promote the book, he went on tour in Australia. Called Bob Saget Live: The Dirty Daddy Tour, the tour featured brand-new material from Saget. He also introduced Snoop Dogg at the Pemberton Music Festival. 

In 2016, Saget returned to the role of Danny Tanner, appearing in 15 episodes of the show’s sequel series, Fuller House. He released a new comedy special, Bob Saget: Zero to Sixty, in 2017, and became the host of the CMT game show Nashville Squares. The following year, he married his second wife, Kelly Rizzo. Saget launched a podcast, Bob Saget’s Here for You, in 2020. 

On January 9, 2022, while he was on tour, Saget was found unresponsive in his hotel room at the Ritz Carlton Orlando after he failed to check out. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. His death was caused by blunt head trauma that occurred after an accidental fall. The final episode of his podcast, which featured Dane Cook, was released post-humorously.

• Saget started working on his comedy routines when he was just 17 years old. He describes his early jokes as “wild,” but he went on to refine his comedy as his career develop. 
• Before every show, Saget liked to spend 30 minutes completely alone. He said that he learned this skill on Broadway and that having time to himself helped him to focus. 
• Bob Saget wasn’t the first choice for Danny Tanner. Initially, an actor named John Posey was cast. Producers weren’t satisfied with Posey after they filmed the pilot, and they brought Saget in to play the role instead.
• When Saget was on Full House and America’s Funniest Home Videos, he frequently worked more than 80 hours a week. While he has said that this period was difficult for him, he also believes that he was lucky to have two great jobs. 
• Like Danny Tanner, Bob Saget had three daughters: Aubrey Saget, Lara Saget, and Jennifer Saget. In his book, he described his daughters as “exceptional” and said that he is fortunate to have had three girls. 

Bob Saget’s Legacy

When Saget’s sister died of Scleroderma at the age of 47, Saget worked to increase awareness of the condition and raise funds for research. He began serving on the board of the Scleroderma Research Foundation in 2003. After his death, many fans made donations to the organization in Saget’s memory. The organization also received a $1.5 million grant intended to match the donations made in Saget’s name. 

Saget was a beloved figure in the comedy community, and after his death, many comedians got together to honor his memory. A tribute comedy special was filmed at The Comedy Store in late January. The special will be released on Netflix in June of 2022.
