Early Days of Diana Ross

Diana Ernestine Earle Ross was born in downtown Detroit, Michigan, on March 26, 1944.  She was the second of six children born to Fred Ross, Sr., and Ernestine Moten Ross.  She has two sisters and three brothers.  Diana’s friend in the North End section of Detroit was neighbor William Robinson. 

When Diana was fourteen, her family relocated to a working-class neighborhood known as Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects.  Later, in January 1962, she graduated from Cass Technical High School.  While attending Cass Tech, Diana took modeling and cosmetology classes.  Smokey Robinson loaned her the money to attend that school.  He would later be instrumental in furthering her music career and a talented artist in his own right.

Career Beginnings for Diana Ross

When Ross was fifteen, she joined a singing group called the Primettes.  They were the sister group of the band, the Primes.  Other members of this group were Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Betty McGlown.  The group auditioned for Motown CEO Berry Gordy.  Betty McGlown was eventually replaced by Barbara Martin, who was to leave later and be replaced by Diana.  The Primettes became Diana Ross and the Supremes vocal group; the rest is history.

In the late 1960s, Diana Ross left the Supremes and embarked on a solo career.  She was one of the first African American women to co-host the Academy Awards in April 1974.  She was so extraordinarily popular by then that it was a natural choice.  Ross began an acting career and proceeded to go into films as well as musical endeavors.  She won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her role in Lady Sings the Blues.  Then Ross starred in Mahogany alongside Billy Dee Williams, which was also a fabulous film. 

Highlights for Personal Life Ross

In the mid-60s, Ross was romantically linked with Berry Gordy, head of the Motown label, and they lasted for several years.  Gordy is the father of Diana’s eldest child, Rhonda Suzanne Silberstein.  Following their break-up, Ross married Robert Ellis Silberstein, a music executive.  He adopted Rhonda and raised her along with Diana.

Together Silberstein and Ross had two daughters.  One was Tracee Joy Silberstein and the other Chudney Lane Silberstein.  That union ended in 1977.  For a while, Diana dated singer Gene Simmons, the primary force behind the rock band Kiss.

Ross later went on to meet and then marry Arne Naess Jr.  Together, they have two sons, Ross Arne and Evan Ross Naess.  That marriage lasted until 2000.  Arne Naess tragically lost his life in 2004.  Right now Diana Ross is the proud grandmother of seven children.  She stayed close with her three ex-step children from her union with Naess.
