Early Life

George  Harvey  Strait  Senior was born on May 18, 1952, to Doris  Jean Couser and John Byron Strait Sr; in Poteet, Texas. He grew up in Frio County, Texas, where his father worked as a teacher in a  junior secondary school. In addition, his father owned a 2,000-acre cattle ranch, where George and his family could work during the weekends.

George’s parents divorced when he was in grade four, and he and his brother, John Jr, were raised by their father on the farm.

George joined Pearsall High School for his O-level studies. While at Pearsall school, George fell in love with music and joined the rock and roll garage band to nurture his interest. 

Though initially attracted to rock bands like the Beatles, his tastes rapidly changed for country music. He started following country artists like Hank Thompson, Merle  Haggard, Frank Sinatra, Bob Wills, and many others. 

He could also attend live performances by country artists throughout Texas.

Marriage And Military Service

After high school, Strait eloped with his high school lover, Norma, and the two married on 4th  December 1971. He was later enlisted as an infantryman in the United  States Army, where he worked for four years (1971 to1975).

During his four years of service at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Strait joined an army-sponsored band named ‘Rumbling Country’ or ‘Santee.’ They welcomed their firstborn daughter, Jennifer, while still in the Schofield barracks in October 1972.

George Strait was honorably discharged from the American army in 1975. He later joined Southwest Texas  State  University, where he graduated with a degree in agriculture.

Career and Success

During college, Strait joined the first country music band, Stoney Ridge. Upon entering the group, George Strait changed the group’s name to Ace from the Hole Band and immediately became the lead artist.

Since then,  they would perform in various bars and honky tonks in Texas and attracted followers from all over the state.

Following their popularity in Texas, Strait and his group were offered a chance to record several singles like “I Can’t Go On Dying Like This” and “That Don’t Change The Way I Feel About You,”   among others.

However,  their songs didn’t get great traction, and Strait could work on his family farm to supplement his income.

Generally, Strait faced many challenges during the start of his career. At some point,  he almost quit country music to design cattle pens after finding a recording deal in vain. However, he decided to give it a second chance after a long discussion with his wife.

Finally,  he secured a  recording deal with MCA records in 1981, where he released his first single, the ‘unwound.’ I  can say this deal was a Godsend to him because the release (Unwound)  ranked number six on the Billboard  Hot  Country Songs Chart in 1981. The song was featured in his debut album, Strait Country.

The following year, Strait released his second album, ‘Strait from the heart,’ which included “Fool Hearted Memory,” The number-one single of his career. During the same period, George Strait started to perform his music in live shows like Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Strait continued to produce impactful hot country music releases, even after the demise of their beloved daughter Jennifer, which earned him several awards. 

Examples of his albums in the period included the Ocean Front Property (1987), Beyond The Blue Neon (1989), “The Ocean Front Property,” etc.,  which secured the top position in the country album charts. Indeed, his ‘Ocean  Front Property’ was the first country album to appear at number one on the charts in country music history.

His hot country music releases earned him the Country Music Association Award for entertainer of the year in 1989.

In the following decade, George Strait continued to release hot country songs like ‘Living It Up,’ ‘I Cross My Heart,’ ‘When Did You Stop Loving Me,’  ‘Strait Out of the Box,’ etc., most of which debuted at number one on the country charts. His album, ‘Strait Out of the Box,’ was the second best-selling album in his career.

During the same decade, he was named the best vocalist in the country music awards for 1997 and 1998.
