Joseph William Namath, aka Joe Namath, aka “Broadway Joe,” is a Super Bowl legend and Hall of Famer in the American national football league world.
The 12th overall pick in the 1965 Draft, Joe Namath secured himself the highest rookie contract in pro football history at the time. For his first ever contract, Joe Namath signed to be with the New York Jets for three years and a whopping $427,000. This was indeed very impressive, especially for someone who only played college football up to that point.
The Jets’ investment in him would have been returned to them tenfold as he broke and made record after record, including being the first quarterback in pro football history to surpass 4,000 passing yards.
In his illustrious football career spanning 13 years with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams, he proved time and again why he deserved a spot in the American Football League’s Hall of Fame in 1985, despite the many obstacles he had to face because of sport-related injuries.
What is Joe Namath’s Net Worth?
As of 2022, Joe Namath net worth is $25 million. Much of this wealth was earned from the sponsorships he had during his time playing professional quarterback, as well as from his entertainment career and various business investments.
Being a famous personality on and off the football field opened up many different opportunities for Namath. Not only did he make plenty of appearances on television shows–the most popular of which being in ‘The Brady Bunch’ and ‘The Simpsons’–he also did movies too!
He was also hot in demand as an endorser for various goods and products, from popcorn makers to typewriters, to Nike Zoom Air to healthcare. The nickname Broadway Joe couldn’t have been any more appropriate.
Business/Investments
With his star power, it’s easy to imagine how investors and companies quickly come to him to get their brands associated with him. At the same time, however, Namath had business plans outside of his football career.
Bachelors III
In 1969, Joe Namath opened Bachelors III, the bar and nightclub on Lexington Avenue. For this business, he teamed up with fellow New York Jets player Ray Abbruzzese and singer Bobby Van. With their combined star power, the bar quickly became the hotspot for singles looking to meet fellow singles.
It got so popular that it couldn’t help but attract other celebrities as well. And because it was THE place to see and be seen, even members of New York’s elite could not skip being in Bachelors III. For all its success and glitz and glamor, however, it eventually had to shut down shortly because it also attracted many of those from the city’s organized crime groups, which ultimately smeared the bar’s reputation.
Because of this, no less than the head of the American Football League, Commissioner Pete Rozelle, gave Namath an ultimatum: choose between the bar or the NFL. Namath didn’t appreciate the intrusion into his personal business and so skipped the training camp that year.
Eventually, however, he returned to his senses and realized that his NFL career is more lucrative and sustainable in the long run, so he gave up the bar to return to the Jets.
Real Estate
Namath also knew how to invest his money to yield growth and passive income. He invested in real estate properties for himself and his family, all of which would grow in value over time.
One of his most recent purchases was a duplex co-op on the Upper West Side in New York for his daughter and her husband. Its prime location makes it a mere short walk away from Broadway.
Besides that, Namath also owns a 6,000-square-foot home on a sprawling 1.5 acres, sitting right next to the Tequesta Golf Course in Florida.
The property features a swimming pool and a private boat dock with direct access to the open waters. This is known to be Joe Namath’s retirement home.
Restaurant
In 2021, Namath opened a new restaurant with his business partner, Charles Monica. Simply called Charlie & Joe’s, the restaurant is located on Love Street at the famous waterfront destination of Jupiter Inlet Village.
The restaurant reportedly cost $30 million in capital, but hopes are high that the restaurant will do well. Mainly because its location is a destination in itself, the complex has an outdoor area for more seating, where people can watch the fishermen haul in their catch.
It also doesn’t hurt that the area is well-known for other celebrity-owned businesses, including The Woods, owned by Tiger Woods, and 1000 North, owned by Michael Jordan.
Fun Facts
Did you know that among Namath’s many popular commercials and endorsements, one that stood out was for pantyhose?
In 1973, Joe Namath appeared in a commercial for Hanes’ Beautymist pantyhose. What made it controversial and ahead of its time was that he wore it to prove a point.
“This commercial will prove to the women of America that Beautymist pantyhose can make any leg look like a million dollars,” an unknown narrator said at the beginning of the commercial. The camera slowly pans its way up to reveal no other than Joe Namath, lying on his side and posing delicately, wearing the pantyhose himself.
“Now, I don’t wear pantyhose. But if Beautymist can make my legs look good, imagine what they’ll do for yours.”
Nowadays, in recent news, he’s no longer advertising for pantyhose brands, although he’s putting his vintage mink coats up for auction.
