Kris Jenner was the firstborn child of Robert True “Bob” Houghton, an engineer, and Mary Jo “M. J.” Shannon, owner of a children’s clothing store.

M. J. and Bob divorced when Kris was seven years old, and she and her younger sister, Karen, Casey, continued to be raised by their mother.

M. J. remarried business owner Harry Shannon, who helped raise Kris, Karen, and their new baby brother, Steven “Steve” Shannon.

Eventually, Harry Shannon’s business partner ran off with all the company’s capital three months after the Shannon family moved to Oxnard, California, so they packed up and went home to San Diego. 

Kris Jenner went on to work at Shannon & Company, a children’s clothing store owned by her mother, in San Diego. Later graduating from Clairemont High School in 1973 and, In 1976, she started working as a flight attendant for American Airlines for a year.

Two years later, on July 8, 1978, Kris married lawyer Robert Kardashian (who later became well known for his early legal representation of O. J. Simpson). They eventually divorced in March 1991 but remained close until his death in 2003 from esophageal cancer.

One month later, after divorcing Kardashian, Kris married a second husband, retired Olympian Bruce Jenner, in April 1991. A few years later, they had Kendall Jenner (born in 1995) and Kylie Jenner (born in 1997).

However, their marriage was over when Bruce faced public scrutiny for transitioning to a transgender woman in 2015, taking the name Caitlyn Jenner. The Jenners announced their divorce in October 2013, and Kris filed for divorce on September 22, 2014, citing irreconcilable differences.
