Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro Pelosi was born on March 26th of 1940 In Baltimore, Maryland as the only girl in a family of seven.  Her mother comes from Italian descent and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1912.  Mrs. Annunciata M. “Nancy” Lombardi D’Alesandro was married to Thomas D’Alesandro Jr.

Nancy Pelosi’s father was her primary inspiration in the world of politics.  He was a Democratic congressman in Maryland and later became the Mayor of Baltimore.  As a young girl, Nancy frequently helped in his campaign events.  In her early life, Nancy Pelosi graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame and later, in 1962, from Trinity College in Washington, D.C.  She had earned a degree in the field of political science. 

It was at an early age in the 1960s that she was an intern for Senator Daniel Brewster and also for Steny Hoyer who much later in his career was House Majority Leader.  One could say that Nancy Pelosi literally had politics in her blood.

A little later on in her life, Nancy moved to San Francisco, California.  It was then that she became friends with Phillip Burton who was a congressman in the 5th district.  Nancy Pelosi then began to make a name for herself in Democratic politics at a tender young age.  Initially as a Democratic National Committee member, and later was chosen to be the party chair of the California Democratic Party.

In a special election in April 1987, Nancy Pelosi was elected to congress for her district in San Francisco.  She has been there ever since.  Today she is the Speaker of the House in the United States House of Representatives. 

Nancy is the first woman to hold that position. Through the process of our election system, Nancy Pelosi held that position as a result of responsive politics.  Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Frank Pelosi is very supportive of her endeavors.

This extraordinary woman has served on the Appropriations and Intelligence and was a ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee.  Back in March 1988 passionately voted in support of the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987.  In 2001, Nancy Patricia Pelosi was elected to the position of House Minority Whip and later became the House Minority Leader. 

Mrs. Pelosi initially held the speakership from 2007 until 2011.  She defeated Republican John Boehner who was seeking reelection to that seat.  For a brief period of time, she was ousted from the speakership when Republicans took over the House of Representatives.
