Reba McEntire is an American country music singer and business owner who does considerable charity work. She was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, to Jacqueline Smith McEntire and Clark Vincent McEntire and has three siblings. She’s best known for her blue eyes, red hair, and strong Oklahoma accent.

Reba McEntire’s Early Years

Reba McEntire grew up traveling all around with her family because her father was a world champion rodeo performer. She and her three siblings, under the guidance of her mother, Jacqueline McEntire, would learn songs and harmonize in their vehicle during those long trips.

She and her two younger sisters formed the Singing McEntires when Reba was in the ninth grade. The trio performed at rodeos. It disbanded before Reba started college, but she continued singing solo. McEntire graduated from Kiowa High School in 1973 and Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Reba McEntire’s Career

When country artist Red Steagall heard her, Reba McEntire was singing at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo. He was impressed by how she sang the National Anthem and helped her record a demo. That led to her signing with Mercury Records as MCA Nashville Records.

During the rest of that decade, she worked nonstop to release singles. Those early songs weren’t hits but helped propel her career.

In 1980, the “Queen of Country” released “You Lift Me Up (To Heaven),” and it made the Billboard Country Top 10. During this time, Nashville was still primarily dominated by males, but Reba didn’t let that stop her. She used her rowdy rodeo girl image to keep her centerstage.

The release of her studio album “Whoever’s in New England” in 1986 was her first Grammy award-winning album. She won the best female country vocal performance for the single titled after the album. That single combined Reba’s country twang with a bit of mainstream pop to appeal to a wider audience than traditional country songs.

In that same year, “What Am I Gonna Do About You” earned Reba the “Entertainer of the Year” and “Female Vocalist of the Year” titles from the Country Music Association. She held the “Female Vocalist of the Year from 1984 through 1987.

Personal Life Reba McEntire

Reba McEntire is also a successful businesswoman. She has a clothing line. She also opened a restaurant called Reba’s Place with a bar and live entertainment.

She’s had her share of personal losses. She married wrestling champion Charlie Battles in 1976 and divorced in 1987.

In 1991, her entire band died in a tragic plane crash. Reba wasn’t on that plane and deeply mourned that loss.

Reba McEntire married Narvel Blackstock in 1989, and they welcomed Reba’s only child, Shelby McEntire Blackstock, in 1990. They divorced in 2015.
