Whether you have loved or hated him, odds are good you know precisely who Rush Limbaugh, the crowned king of radio talk, was.  As the host of his own conservative radio show, and frequent guest commentator on others’ radio and television shows, Limbaugh definitely made a name for himself as a radio talk show host.  The Rush Limbaugh Show was nationally syndicated on AM and FM radio stations between 1988 and the time of his passing in early 2021.  Rush Limbaugh’s net worth was $600 million. 

Who Is Rush Limbaugh?

Once called the Doctor of Democracy, Rush Limbaugh has been said by many a knowledgeable person to be the founder of AM radio.  Early in his radio days, Limbaugh pledged to be a force to be reckoned with by the general radio audience.  He certainly was the host of his show as a political commentator.

In addition to political commentary, his shows typically featured a touch of scathing comedy about personalities who were thought to be untouchable.  Rush was certainly not afraid to speak his mind about anything.  According to his loyal audience, he was the undisputed leader of the conservative movement in the United States.

Early Days of Rush Limbaugh

Rush Hudson Limbaugh III was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on January 12, 1951.  His father was Rush Hudson Limbaugh Jr, a United States fighter pilot and, at that time, a prominent political figure in his own right.

Rush’s mother was Mildred Carolyn Armstrong Limbaugh.  The family also included younger brother David Limbaugh.  Rush Limbaugh Sr, Rush’s paternal grandfather, was a Missouri prosecuting attorney who served in the Missouri House of Representatives for a time.  The future king of talk radio was born into a politically active family, as one can deduce. 

Rush Limbaugh’s Beginnings in Radio

After dropping out of Southeast Missouri State University following two unsuccessful semesters, Rush Limbaugh began to embark on his radio career.   He would cite Chicago disc jockey Larry Lujack as a huge influence on him.  Rush’s mom said radio was his only interest for most of his life.  As time went on, he lost interest in the musical side of radio but was enamored with the business side and the world of talk radio.

Rush’s first radio job was at a Top 40 station in Pennsylvania, where his style was compared to the likes of an early Imus or Howard Stern.  In 1975 at KUDL in Kansas City, Missouri, Rush Limbaugh became the host of a public affairs talk program that aired on weekend mornings.  This was where he developed his style.  He also had a brief stint on the radio station WHB. 

Fast-forward to the late 1980s, New York City’s WABC executive Ed McLaughlin gave Rush the nationally syndicated noon to 2 PM time slot.  From there, he proceeded to skyrocket to fame and would later become the icon he was when Rush Limbaugh died from advanced lung cancer.  Limbaugh’s radio show was adored by many, as was the beloved Rush himself. 

Career Achievements of Rush Limbaugh

He won the Marconi Radio Award for syndicated radio host of the year on numerous occasions.  In addition to his radio show, from 1992 to 1996, Rush Limbaugh was a former television show host and is a noted author.  He has published two New York Times best-selling political novels.  Limbaugh signed many of them in special events.  Former President Donald Trump also gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. 

On KFBK radio station in Sacramento, California, in 1984, Limbaugh made his radio talk show debut.  Eventually, this show morphed into The Rush Limbaugh Show and lasted for 37 years until his death.  His widow, Kathryn Rogers, announced the death of Rush Limbaugh on the air in what would have been his usual time slot.  Former wives Roxy Maxine McNeely, Michelle Sixta, and Marta Fitzgerald were also informed of his passing.  He never had any children.

Rush Limbaugh’s Legacy

In addition to his radio show which made him an icon to many loyal followers, Rush Limbaugh was known for his charitable work.  He did an annual telethon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and contributed a lot of money to this and other cancer-related charities.

Limbaugh’s widow, Kathryn Rogers, inherited the West Palm Beach, Florida, mansion that the couple shared in his later years.  It features seven bedrooms, twelve bathrooms, and an elevator.  Part of this property also housed Rush Limbaugh’s radio broadcast studio.  This estate is said to be worth $150 million at the time of his death.  He will always have the distinction of having the most listened-to radio show of the century. 

Ask any conservative talk show host today, and they will tell you that Rush Limbaugh is simply not replaceable.  Although his time slot on the radio has been filled, his presence will never be equaled.  This is the legacy left behind by the one and only Rush Limbaugh.  Will the conservative movement itself survive?  The answer to that question remains to be seen.  One thing is sure, there won’t ever be another Rush Limbaugh.
