This Touching Video About Kindness Has The Internet In Tears

When it comes to kindness, what goes around comes around. That’s the message of the short film Ripple, by Singaporean director Daniel Yam. The five minute short depicts a woman buying groceries with her two grandchildren. It’s her husband’s birthday, but when she goes to pay for the cake her granddaughter picked out, she finds herself unable to afford it. What happens next has left the internet in tears – but at least they’re the good kind of tears. The heartwarming finale has made Yam’s beautiful film go viral, earning 9,000 favorites on Asian film-making website viddsee, and nearly 800,000 views on YouTube so far. Kimberly Yam (no relation), writing for The Huffington Post, calls it “a testament to how far a little goodwill can go.”

This isn’t Yam’s only foray into the emotional side of film-making. His other short film, Gift, tells the story of a man who grew up resenting his father, only to find out his true intentions were selfless. Both Ripple and Gift have garnered much praise for their direct, emotive style, with many commenters noting how difficult it is to watch them without activating the waterworks.
