Who is Young Thug?

Young Thug is a rapper, songwriter, and record producer. His official name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, and he was born on August 16, 1991, in Atlanta, Georgia. He comes from a big family of 10 siblings—Young Thug is the tenth. His siblings have different biological fathers, except for him and his younger sister—they have the same father.

Thug got expelled during his last year in elementary school for physical attacks on his teacher and breaking his teacher’s arm. He got put into juvenile detention for four years. Because of the environment he was living in, the exposure led him to the thrills of bad behavior. As a result, he developed an addiction to drugs and violence.

Young Thug grew up in a rough neighborhood in a demolished area of Sylvan Hills, Atlanta, Georgia. The area was rift with crimes, he witnessed his old brother getting shot, and another old brother of his is incarcerated for being accused of murder.

Early Career

At 19, Young Thug debuted as a guest appearance in another rapper’s song. From 2011 to 2011, he released his mixtape, and not long after, it got the attention of the Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane. Mane was impressed with the I Came from Nothing beat from his mixtape and signed Thug to his record label 1017 Brick Squad Records in 2013. Under the Gucci Mane banner, Young Thug released his fourth mixtape titled 1017 Thug—the songs were acclaimed hits, being described as unique for their originality. It received praise from music publications such as Pitchfork, FACT, Complex, and Rolling Stone magazine. It was ranked number five on the 10 Best Mixtapes of 2013 by Rolling Stones.

With the project being an incredible success, later that year, Young Thug released his debut single, Stoner and Danny Glover—both singles were equally a hit. Unfortunately, his songs were remixed by other artists such as Jim Jones, Waka Flocka Flame, and Nicki Minaj, which Young Thug highly disapproved of and even publicly protested about it.

Rise to Popularity

In 2015, as Young Thug has risen to popularity, record labels were eager to sign him. Rumors were circulating that Thug had ditched Gucci Mane for a more lucrative deal with another record; in this case, Future’s Freebandz Records was revealed to offer Thug $8.5 million, and his affiliation with Cash Money Records was also another. But Young Thug didn’t bite the hand that originally brought him fame, he remained with 1017 Brick Squad Records.

In 2014, Thug recorded several songs with major artists such as Kayne West, Rich Homie, and Chief Keef. West praised Thug’s ability to create songs swiftly. Being in the limelight, Thug was featured on the cover of a popular magazine in NYC, The Fader. In that same year, Thug announced his debut album will be titled Carter 6 as a dedication to his idol, Lil Wayne­­—referencing Wayne’s highly acclaimed album The Carter.

During the production of his debut album Carter 6, the songs were leaked onto the internet and went viral. Thug went to work to fix the damage and immediately released two mixtapes – Slime Season and Slime Season 2 to recover from the loss. Unfortunately, another misfortune arose, Lil Wayne wasn’t impressed with Young Thug’s tribute and hit him with a lawsuit. There is much confusion on who and which record label he is now with—Young Thug finally revealed that he’s with Atlantic Records. Thug’s Carter 6 album was changed to a mixtape and named iTunes under Atlantic Records.

When Kanye West listened to Thug’s unreleased music, he was very impressed. In late 2015, West announced they’ll collaborate together on a new album but didn’t specify the timeframe. In 2016, Young Thug released another mixtape, Slime Season 3 to mark an end to the leaked album fiasco.

Between 2016 and 2018, Young Thug collaborated and featured in several notable artists’ music videos, such as Drake and Calvin Harris. He was featured in Camila Cabello’s single Havana, the song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and bagged him the 2018 Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Award. In 2018, he released a compilation album Slime Language with his label YSL Records, imprinted of Atlantic Records.

In April 2021, his second compilation was released, titled Slime Language 2—it featured many guest appearances such as Drake, Rowdy Rebel, and Big Sean. Just like a few of Thug’s previous hits, it unbelievably also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. After the release of his second studio album, Punk, in October 2021, Kobalt Music Group announced they own the rights to the publishing and creative services management.

Personal Life

Young Thug became a father by the time he was 17. He fathered six children by four different women by the time he was 25.

In 2015, he got engaged to a manager of a swimsuit line Jerrika Karlae. The engagement was called off at the end of 2022. Karlae accused Young Thug of relentless abuse and chronic cheating.

Real Estate

 In September 2016 Thug bought his first home in for $2.75 million in Buckhead, Atlanta. The property size is more than 11,000 square feet. It has six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a full bar, a theater room, and a four-car garage.

On August 16, 2021, Young Thug was gifted 100 acres of land in Atlanta for his 30th birthday by his manager Geoff Ogunlesi, and his real estate agent Trey Williams. He named the land Slime City. Thug said he plans to build Slime City that will have waterparks, new homes, a camping site, a dirt bike trail, and a venue for his annual music festival, Slime Fest. 

In October 2021, Thug bought a house in an Atlanta upscale Buckhead neighborhood for $3.05 million. It has five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and 5,903 square feet of living space. The eye-catching design features a stone-and-wood exterior, a pivoting front door, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Legal Issues

In 2015, Young Thug was sued for alleged involvement in a shooting on a tour bus Lil Wayne was in. Thug was arrested for threatening to kill a security guard at an Atlanta mall that same year.  Also in 2015, a lawsuit was filed against Thug for not showing up at a concert in Sahlen’s Stadium after a $55,000 contract was signed. And in April 2015, Heritage Select Homes filed a lawsuit against Thug claiming that he owed $2.2 million in house payments.

In 2018, Thug was charged with possession and intent to distribute drugs (meth, hydrocodone, and marijuana).

On May 9, 2022, Thug was arrested in Atlanta on gang-related charges. Thug and along with 27 other people connected to YSL (Young Slime Life) were charged in a 56-count Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) in a state court. A RICO act is a federal law designed to combat organized crime in the United States. As of July, the Atlanta-based rapper was denied bond and will remain in prison until his January trial.
